Motorbikes or motorcycles are two-wheeled vehicles powered by a motor. Motorcycles are one of the cheapest and most widespread forms of motorized transport in many parts of the world. A wide variety of motorcycles exist:
- Mopeds are small, light, inexpensive, efficient rides for getting around town. usually started by pedaling. Usually limited to under 50cc motors, often using 2 stroke motors.
- Dual Sport are street legal machines offering off road abilities.
- Enduro is a street legal version of a motorcross machine, featuring high ground clearness and copious suspension with minimal creature comforts. Not for long distance road travel. The few features that are different from the motocross versions are the mufflers, the flywheel weights and the presence of features necessary for highway use.
Scooters are motorbikes with a step-through frame and generally smaller wheels than those of traditional motorcycles. Scooters have the engine as part of the swingarm, meaning their engines travel up & down with the suspension. They are often automatic transmissions, small (generally less than 125 cc) engines, and a step-through configuration allowing the rider to ride with both feet on a running-board and knees together. In Europe, particularly Italy, scooters are very popular. In the United States scooters have long been a fixture on college campuses due to their portability and exceptional fuel economy. However much larger scooters with engine displacements greater than 250 cc are growing in popularity. The Honda Silver Wing, Honda Reflex, and Suzuki Burgman are the most popular "maxi-scooter" models currently available in the United States.- Sports bikes are fast, light, sleek motorcycles designed for maximum performance. They are easily distinguishable by their brightly colored plastic bodywork and the rider's tipped-forward seating position.
Cruisers range from small to large motorcycles designed for comfort and looks with a relaxed upright seating position. They are notable for their extensive use of chrome and are often highly customized. Choppers are custom motorcycles with long rake and wild paint jobs. These are created more for show than dependability and ride-ability. - Touring motorcycles are designed for comfort and reliability. Both cruisers and sport bikes can also be used as touring bikes.
- Sport touring bikes are hybrid of the sport bike and the touring motorbike for those who desire the best of both of these worlds.
- Dirt bikes/motorcross/off road motorbikes are designed for racing, recreation, or sometimes long-distance touring in off road conditions.
- Pocket bikes are small imitations of sport bikes designed for recreation or racing by all age levels.
- Mini motos are very small bikes designed to be simple and fun for kids. Generally they have no clutch or shifting to simplify operation.
